The largest crowd of the season was on hand Oct. 10 at Lane Stadium as Oakwood High School honored 10 senior field hockey players and matched up with rival Fairmont High School.
FHS got on the scoreboard first, midway through the first half. The teams went into halftime with OHS down 1-0, despite the home team’s domination on offense. OHS had 25 shots on goal to FHS’ one in the first half.
In the second half, it was more of the same with Oakwood peppering the Fairmont goalie with shot and after shot off multiple corners, eventually resulting in a foul on the Fairmont goalie. The foul led to the rarely given “stroke,” the equivalent to a penalty kick in soccer. Senior Captain Delaney Malloy stopped the shot, keeping the score 1-0. Minutes later, OHS senior Jaelynn Nelson-Mays scored, tying the game 1-1. The two teams entered a 10-minute overtime with neither able to score.
