Oakwood High Schools girls’ cross country is celebrating a second place team finish at the OHSAA Division II State Championships Saturday, Nov. 7. OHS placed three runners in the top 10, including state champion Grace Hartman.
Coach Alex Brouhard says Hartman went into the race a favorite but it all came down to strategy.
“She executed a perfect race and deserves all the credit for her win. Grace has an unbeatable work ethic and is both physically and mentally strong. We are proud of Grace for her toughness today, but even prouder of what she does week-in and week-out for her teammates,” Brouhard said.
Teammates who placed well throughout the season and at the state event. Bella Butler finished fifth and Hannah Moulton eighth for OHS. Abby Snodgrass, Katy Butler, Gabriella Kimbrough and Caterina Tian-Svobodny rounded out the OHS state team. Brouhard says “team culture and consistency” led to the state success and success throughout the OHS program.
“The girls have come together as a family and put the team goals ahead of everything else. Coach Kurt Sanford and I tell our team that champions are made in June and July. These girls trained with us all summer and put in the work. It’s so exciting to see this team reach their goals.”
While the team will lose one of its leaders in Moulton, Brouhard says some talented runners will be competing to be a part of the varsity team next year.
“We bring back a lot of really young talent in freshmen Neave Lynch, Sarah Connell, Annie Neff-Isom and Maggie O’Hara who will all compete for spots on the varsity team next year. We also have some middle school standouts we are really excited about. I think the girls’ team is here to stay as a competitive, state caliber team.”
